The floor of the Danakil Depression sits 125 metres below sea level, and it is still sinking. This is one of the few places on the planet where a mid-ocean ridge can be walked on dry land. The Arabian, Nubian and Somali plates are pulling apart beneath the Afar Triangle at roughly two centimetres a year.
Geologists expect a new ocean here — in perhaps a million years. Until then, the basin remains the hottest inhabited place measured on Earth, with annual averages near 34°C and summer readings well past 45°C.
